The bridge stretches 1,260 feet across the Royal Gorge and is suspended approximately 956 feet above the Arkansas River below. That means when you’re standing on the bridge, you’re looking down into one of Colorado’s most dramatic natural landscapes.

The Royal Gorge Bridge was specifically built so visitors could experience the incredible scenery of the gorge. Then came the railroad.
The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad began running trains through the Royal Gorge in 1880, opening another chapter in the region's history and connecting travelers to this dramatic part of Colorado.
During her visit, Monica stood in front of one of the original narrow-gauge trains that once traveled through the canyon—a reminder that long before today's adventure seekers arrived with cameras and smartphones, people were already coming to the Royal Gorge to experience its incredible scenery.
And the railroad is still part of the experience today.
The Royal Gorge Route Railroad travels through the canyon along the Arkansas River, offering yet another way to take in the landscape.
A Story of Resilience
The Royal Gorge Bridge has also survived one of the most devastating chapters in the park's modern history.
On June 11, 2013, the Royal Gorge Fire swept through the area. Strong winds pushed the flames across the gorge, and approximately 90% of the 360-acre park was destroyed. Forty-eight of the park's 52 structures were lost.
But the bridge survived.
Although approximately 100 wooden planks were damaged, the historic steel structure remained largely intact.
What happened next became a story of determination and community resilience.
The park was rebuilt and welcomed visitors back in 2014, with new facilities, landscaping and attractions. Today, the Royal Gorge stands not only as a symbol of Colorado's natural beauty, but also as a reminder of what can be rebuilt after devastation.
That history makes walking across the bridge feel even more meaningful.

One of the most memorable moments from Monica's visit wasn't a thrill ride at all.
It was spotting bighorn sheep enjoying the landscape.
